CHAMPIONS elect Winsley are closing in on the Wiltshire Division title and promotion to the Glos/Wilts Division but they were made to work hard by Marlborough.

Charlie Holton’s side won the toss and chose to bowl first, with Josh Rurawhe turning the screw with by taking four wickets for 50 runs.

Only Duncan Lorrain and George Penfold could make any inroads with the bat for Marlborough, as they hit 38 and 21 respectively.

Simon Orchard claimed a further two wickets while Rob Murphy, Andrew Cross and Peter Orchard all got in on the act with a wicket each to see Marlborough skittledfor just 131.

Chasing a modest target of 132, Winsley slipped to 93-7 before Rurawhe and Cross put on an unbeaten eighth-wicket partnership of 40 to steer their side to victory.

The hosts hit back well in the field, with spinner Ben Head leading the way with 3-27 while William Grant and Nick Crabbe both took 2-37.

In the end, however, it wasn’t enough.

Rob Murphy’s 39 set the platform and, despite the mid-order wobble, the champions-elect strode home for their 11th win from 15 matches.

Holton’s men host second-placed Lechlade tomorrow and will be seeking a vital victory to edge them even closer to title glory.
