WESTBURY United manager Sam Gooding was left rueing missed chances as his side slipped to another home defeat, 1-0 at home to Wellington.

Wellington came into the match on a 10-game losing streak but grabbed the points as Paul Pocock found the net after a goalmouth scramble six minutes before half time.

“We played really well, but we just couldn’t put our chances away,’’ said Gooding.

“We even hit the bar, but when you’re down at the bottom things don’t go your way and that’s what happened against Wellington.”

The pace of Westbury’s attack seemed destined to break the deadlock, as they forced Wellington keeper Chris McKee into a number of saves.

But Pocock’s intervention proved decisive, despite a frantic final 10 minutes as Westbury peppered their opponents’ goal Simon Millard, Matt Mead and Gary Tugwell all had efforts blocked and Mark Young smashed the bar with a free kick, leaving Gooding to look forward to this weekend’s difficult Wiltshire Senior Cup clash with Wessex League Downton.

“Results aren’t going our way in the league, so the cup game against Downton will be a welcome distraction,’’ added the Meadlow Lane boss.

“We didn’t get the win we deserved on Saturday – it was an unlucky day at the office.’’
