A NEW name could appear on the Wiltshire men's singles trophy this year.

Only one of the four players who came through the quarter-finals safely at Royal Wootton Bassett on Monday night has lifted the trophy before.

That is Spencer Moulton's Graham Shadwell, who won the crown in 1991 as a teenager when defeating Mel Biggs 21-19.

However, the England international has only appeared in one singles final since and that was in 2011 when the 42-year-old lost 21-20 to six-times winner Biggs.

In the quarters this year Shadwell was always in command from the outset and beat Holt's Justin Davis 21-12.

Now Shadwell has to combat Ben Gadd (Holt), Tom Pittuck (Town Gardens) and Mike Titcombe (Westlecot) all seeking their first Wiltshire men's singles crown.

Gadd booked his semis spot after leading Graham Hatherall 18-8 at 16 ends but then was pulled back to 18-18 three ends later.

But the Holt man held his nerve with a single and a two to clinch a 21-18 win on the 20th end.

Pittuck had to work hard for his semis place leading Russell Francis 12-8 at 15 ends but tied 14-14 at 20 and 18-15 down after 24 ends.

However, he won the next three to win the tough quarter final 21-18.

In sharp contrast, Westlecot's Mike Titcombe blitzed Danny Russell 21-3 who had registered a shock in the previous round beating Mel Biggs 21-20.

The singles semi-finals will be played at Devizes this Sunday along with the pairs semis but the line-ups will not be known until This Friday night after the quarter-finals have been played at Chippenham Town (6.30pm).
