Club president Mike James believes Trowbridge’s cup win at Twickenham will herald a bright future.

Mr James said the club took 650 supporters on the 12 coaches it laid on, with hundreds more making their own way.

The club believes more than 1,500 fans were at Twickenham to see the team's thrilling 22-19 win over Leek in the RFU Intermediate Cup Final.

He hopes Trowbridge will consolidate their position at the South West level of rugby, after winning promotion this year, with the aim to eventually see the club at level five.

Mr James said: “I think everyone is still pinching themselves and no one can really believe it happened.

“We were recently presented with a defibrillator and I jokingly said after the game I could have done with it to get my heart started again.

“It was a fitting climax to a wonderful season and when you think that Twickenham can hold 82,000, it was incredible how much noise the supporters made. If you talk to the players they will say that it made the difference.

“The main thing now is to build on our position. We are going up a league and we want to stay there.

“We have a great coaching set up and we have lots of youngsters coming through the club who have played for the second team.”

Next season the club will also be running a fourth team, due to the number of players coming through. It took us 10 years to move from Green Lane to Hilperton and I was always convinced it was what we needed to kick start the club.

“We would have never been in this position if we were at Green Lane. In fact, we were probably going backwards.

“Club membership has increased by 300 over the last year and I’m hoping that at least a small percentage of those who came up to Twickenham will also follow the club next season.”
