THE top cop in Wiltshire Police has been appointed chief constable of Sussex Constabulary.

Wiltshire Police expect to announce a replacement for Martin Richards by the end of October and have the new chief constable in post by the end of the year.

Bertie Woolnough, chairman of the Wiltshire Police Authority, thanked him for his valuable work in Wiltshire.

He added: "The force has seen important changes for the better during the tenure of Martin Richards and the next chief constable will take on an effective, modern force capable of yet further improvements in the service it delivers to the people of Wiltshire.

"We have an experienced senior management team and the police authority has complete confidence in them running the force pending the arrival of the new chief constable."
