The future of a Trowbridge multi-storey car park remains at the discussion stage, nearly three months after a swathe of parking bays were closed off.

The car park, which provides direct access to Castle Place shopping centre, has seen dozens of bays closed off for more than a month as Wiltshire Council has appointed an engineer to investigate the structure as repairs were required.

In mid-May, the Wiltshire Times reported Wiltshire Council has said it has received a report from the engineers and is currently considering the recommendations made in the report.

At the time, Lizzie Watkin, Wiltshire Council corporate director for resources, said: “Some of the parking bays on levels 2a and 3a at St Stephen’s Place car park have been closed off to enable structural engineers to assess the repairs required.

“We have now received the report and are considering their recommendations."

However, the future of the multi-storey car park still appears to be under consideration. On June 24, the council said it was still “considering” the engineers’ report.

Cllr Helen Belcher, cabinet member for Assets, said: “Castle Place multi storey car park remains open, with more than 330 spaces available for people to use.

“Only a limited number of bays on levels 2a and 3a are closed. We have received a report from our structural engineers and are currently considering the matter.”

The parking spaces have been fenced off since the end of March, when parking spaces were cordoned off “until further notice” while the council conducted “essential maintenance”.

The bays are on the second and third floors of St Stephens Place multi-storey car park, in sections 2A and 3A.

As the Wiltshire Times previously reported, notices posted in the car park state the bays have been closed off since Monday, March 31, with no end date specified.

Though fences have been put up, notices have also been posted state that vehicles must not park in any of the dozens of bays highlighted on the signs.

On March 25, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Council said that repairs were required, and that an engineer would be investigating the structure before next steps were decided on.
